Art has many functions. The focus of
this exhibition is to show that art
can and does heal. “Art That Heals”
is a representation of some of the many
fascinating forms art assumes when the
intention is healing.
“Art That Heals” does not
have perfection of technique or expert
command of the craft as its goal.
Rather the technique and craft are vehicles
for an experience of one’s true
nature as soul. Any time we experience
the release of our creative force, we
are beginning to “touch the hem
of His garment”, to use a Christian
reference. We are coming closer to feeling
the one-ness or wholeness with the divinity
within all life. The experience of wholeness
results in health. Etymologically, “health”
and “whole” are related;
the Middle English word “hool”
is the root of both words.
The
tradition of healing through art is
not unique to any one religion, although
it can be found in most all. Healing
through art need not have a religious
context per se; however, whether the
label is “religious” or
not, creating art is an act of spirit,
incorporating soul. To come into contact
with one’s true soul is to tap
into wells of love so full and deep
that it makes the earth’s oceans
look shallow. In the case of “Art
That Heals”, love tapped into
is not just a good feeling, it is
a power which heals.
